Students from Rigoma secondary school in Kitutu Masaba constituency have a reason to smile after area MP Timothy Bosire handed in a Sh5 million cheque that is set to build a modern science laboratory.

Speaking on Monday during the fundraising ceremony that saw Sh8 million collected towards the project, Mr Bosire said the move will enable student perform well in sciences which the region is reportedly performing dismally in the national examinations.

Bosire challenged learners to take the opportunity and put the region in the national map during national exams besides promising to equip the laboratory once it is completed.

“Science subjects are important in mankind and I am not happy with the kind of performance I have seen for the last two years. We are performing below average in the sciences and from today, I expect tremendous improvement. I am determined to take the project to institutions which are still operating on minimal resources,” he said.

He said his administration was focused on improving the education standards in the region by offsetting fee balances owed to institutions by needy students besides urging the government to solve the current education stalemate that has seen public schools close due to striking teachers.

“I promised to support education and I want to reiterate that I am on course. More students will receive bursaries and the number is likely to increase from 10,000 secondary school students to at least 15,000 who will be under the programme. The government should pay teachers because students are losing a lot,” he said.
