A Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) official from Masaba North sub-county has challenged the government to consider deploying teachers to their home counties during recruitment.
Speaking on Sunday at Riamoni secondary school during a fundraiser for former teachers from North Eastern who had been redeployed majorly to the Coastal region, secretary-general James Oteki said it was essential for TSC to consider his suggestion for the sake of security.
Mr Oteki said teachers, majorly from Nyamira and Kisii counties, were subjected to unprecedented torture after their colleagues were brutally massacred by suspected Al-Shabaab militia late last year.
“I am not stupid to make such a suggestion because you all saw what happened and actually witnessed the non-commitment from the government. We want teachers to be stationed in their home counties or counties near their homes,” he said.
He faulted the move by TSC to redeploy the teachers who had boycotted teaching since January to the Coastal region and some parts of West Pokot, saying those regions were still affected by insecurity.
“To be very honest, our teachers who complained of insecurity have not been really favored. Most of them will be reporting to Kwale where we have concerns of insecurity and that is why I think it’s unfair,” he said.
His statement was supported by Gesima MCA Ken Atuti who asked the government to act fast and make teachers comfortable by ‘deploying them to their motherland”.
