Kuresoi OCPD David Wambua on Sunday warned residents against engaging in mob justice saying anybody apprehended would be prosecuted.
Wambua advised the residents against taking the law into their own hands saying that it was contravening the law.
“It’s good to involve us in case of any crime so that the right procedure is duly followed. Beating up somebody can lead to death which is not acceptable,” he noted.
He was speaking after a bodaboda operator in Kuresoi was beaten by an irate mob near the shopping centre after a lady he was carrying accused him of trying to rob her of his shopping.
According to residents, trouble started when the operator allegedly threatened the lady while trying to restrain her box of shopping.
“We responded to a cry of help from a lady who was being threatened by a motor cycle operator,” Silas Kirop said.
The man was caught by angry residents including fellow operators before he could escape who beat him up and took him to Kuresoi Police station. A majority of the residents complained of how some operators in the area had formed a habit of threatening them before robbing them.
“They are bold enough to rob you anytime anywhere because they do it at points where you are totally helpless,” noted Alice Kemunto who says she was once roughed up before her phone and a purse containing 6,000sh was stolen.
“Because some of them are unpredictable, it’s better to always use the services of someone you know well,” she advised.
The OCPD cautioned the operators saying that their days were numbered.
“We have received several complains from the public and we are working on relevant information that will see the culprits brought to book,” he said.
