Lake Nakuru national park has acquired an aircraft that will be used to monitor activities in and around the lake in a bid to tame rhino poaching cases.

According to senior warden Dickson Kitan, the aircraft will be making impromptu flights to specific points in the park. He said the move is part of security measures taken to curb increasing cases of rhino poaching and encroachment at the park.

“We have intensified security in order to deal with rhino poachers and people who are encroaching the park," the park officer said.

"The plane will help in identifying and responding to distress cases in and around the park.”

Kitan noted that seven rhinos have been killed since the beginning of the year; the statistics he said are worrying and needs urgent solution.

The warden added that enough security personnel have also been deployed to the park to help in monitoring activities.

Kitan called for collaboration between residents and security officials in order to curb poaching.
