Keumbu Location Senior Chief, Jonathan Machoka has denied that the man who buried his wife in the house hailed from his location.

Speaking to this journalist at Ibeno in Nyaribari Chache constituency on Monday, Machoka instead said the man is a resident at Birongo Location and not Keumbu as reported by a section of the media.

However, the administration officer condemned the act of burying the remains in the house saying its against the culture of Abagusii community.

“There were reports all over viraling that the man who buried his wife in kitchen was from my area, I confirm here that he comes from a neighboring Birongo Location. Nevertheless, where have you seen or heard that a corpse has been buried in kitchen or simply in the house? Maybe in another community,” wondered the chief.

The incident took place on mid may when Lawrence Gekonge buried his wife, Grace Gekonge, in the kitchen on claims that it was a sign of respect and love to his fallen wife. His will also stated that he would be buried in the sitting room of the main house.

His wife, who was a nurse at Moi Teaching and Referral hospital died in March this year, and when he suggested that she could be buried in the house his in-laws objected and went to court to seek judicial redress that Gekonge warn before resting his wife.

His in-laws and some villagers boycotted the send-off ceremony saying it was abomination and against the Abagusii culture to burry the dead in the house unless in exceptional cases.

According to Abagusii culture, its only a toddler who died either by miscarriage of complications during delivery, was buried in the house, kitchen.

According to the chairman for Abagusii Council of Elders James Matundura, burying an adult in the house is not only contravening the Abagusii culture but also showing negative image to the growing generation.

“Our culture abhors such act of burying a person in the house. We condemn it in the strongest terms and these people should not be given a room in the society to propagate evils to our growing generation,” said Matundura.
