A lawyer has said there is a need for the public to be educated on the importance of writing a will and how to manage it thereafter.

Allan Gichuhi, a council member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) speaking in Thika on Tuesday during a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) forum said a will is an important legal document that should be handled with care.

He noted that many people do not know how to manage their wills after writing them leading to endless legal problems and bitter squabbling among their descendants.

"There are many places to store and not to store a will. For example, you do not lock a will in a box and bury it under a mango tree,” said Gichuhi.

He added, "Storing it at your bank or with your lawyer, if either of them is the executor of your estate, is the best.”

He advised those who have to keep their wills at home to always ensure that they are safe from possible water and fire damage adding that someone they trust should be aware of where the will can be found.

On choosing an executor, the lawyer said the executor should be a person who does not benefit directly from the estate to avoid conflict of interest.
