Residents of Limuru Sub-County have been challenged to increase pit latrine coverage in the area in a bid to enhance hygiene for better human health and environment.
Speaking on Thursday after a clean up exercise in Limuru Town and its environs, Kiambu County Water, Environment and Social Services CeC Esther Njuguna, said time has come for the residents to embrace the use of pit latrines and stop defecating in the open.
She said most of the households in semi urban and rural areas did not have toilets and the region has since registered less than 50 per cent toilet coverage leading to regular water borne diseases.
Njuguna said it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the environment was clean and waste is managed in the best way possible especially in urban centres.
“Cleaning up the environment should not be a one day exercise but residents should own it and make it their life style. Good health is directly related to a clean environment,” said Njuguna.
Limuru environmental officer Damaris Muchene, said that plans were under way to introduce a frequent clean-up programme that will ensure consistent clean up exercises that will enhance proper management of waste in the area.
