Residents of Limuru were left disappointed after it became apparent that the much anticipated opening of Uchumi Supermarket in Limuru will not happen.

This became apparent as the fittings installed in preparation for opening the supermarket were removed, an action that left residents unhappy.

The residents witnessed in shock as CCTV cameras, a generator and other furnishings were pulled down.

However, reality sunk when the signboard with the name ‘Uchumi’ was removed from the newly constructed building meant to house the supermarket.

Mr Benson Maina, a resident of Limuru, said, “I was looking forward to shop at the supermarket.”

Maina said competition in any undertaking is good adding he was hoping that with the presence of Cleanshelf Supermarket, Wingmatt Supermarket, Tuskys Supermarket (under construction) and the Uchumi Supermarket, services would have been better and goods better priced.

Maina noted he had heard of the financial woes facing the supermarket chain but had hoped that this would not affect the opening of the Limuru Branch.

Mary Wangui, another Limuru resident, lamented that she had looked forward to getting a job at the supermarket.

“I have been job hunting for over six months now and have been applying for jobs all over. Uchumi in Limuru was one of my targets. I am very disappointed,” said Wangui.

Josiah Kuria, The National Alliance party Chairman for Kiambu County lamented that the area may not be lucky to host the supermarket.
