On Tuesday, Brighter Kisumu lobby group secretary general Silus Ochiel raised concern over the rising number of street children in Kisumu town citing security fears.

He also wants the county government to expedite implementation of the matter.

“We are calling on the county government to establish rehabilitation centres for street children to avert a looming disaster,” Ochiel told Hivisasa in his office.

“Street children do not have jobs, and the only thing they can do to earn a living is by turning to crime. This will hurt our city very much. Measures should be put in place to remove them children from our streets and also stop them from coming back,” added the secretary general.

He said most children on the streets were bright and only needed guidance on the right way, and that rehabilitation centres were the best option.
