Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi has distanced himself from Monday’s demonstrations that were staged by motorists in Ogembo.

The demos came a day after an accident took place at Ogembo town, killing two people and leaving three others with serious injuries, and the residents complained of negligence from the county government in opening up the Bus Park.

The protestors burnt an effigy and demanded the county government to swiftly work on the stage to avert further accidents along the busy highway.

Speaking on Tuesday at Egetuki in Bomachoge Chache constituency during a burial ceremony, maangi, who is also the chair of council of Deputy Governors condemned the incident and said it was unfortunate and against the culture on Abagusii.

It was speculated that Maangi was behind the demos, allegations he dismissed saying he was not aware of the demos, adding that his opponents spread the rumour linking him with the demos.

“I was not aware of the demos, so whoever is connecting me with the incident is only doing it for his well-known reason. I have no issue with governor Ongwae, we have good working relationships and our aim is to deliver to Kisii residents. I condemn the incident and it is not in the culture of Abagusii community,” said Maangi.

However, Governor Ongwae has said his government is having discussions with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) with a view of opening the Ogembo Bus Park for use to avert future accidents.
