Residents of Kinanie Ward in Mavoko have raised concern over alleged invasion of their farms by cattle belonging to the Maasai herders.
Speaking to Hivisasa at Kinanie on Friday, Josephat Kiende said the herders were driving cattle into their farmlands without their consent.
Kiende said the animals were destroying farmlands which most of the residents who are peasant farmers depend on as the only source of livelihood.
He claimed that Maasai herders led cattle into farms of individual residents after the owners have harvested maize. The farmers complained that the animals are interfering with their parcels of land arguing it would cost them a lot to till them in preparation for the next season.
Nominated MCA, Veronica Mutivo, said local farmers whose farms have been affected are upset by the increasing incidents.
Mutivo who is also a resident of the affected area said there was a possibility that victims would hold protests, a situation she argued could potentially lead to conflict between Maasai and Kamba communities.
She wants the county government of Machakos to hold a meeting with their counterparts from the neighbouring Kajiado County to resolve the matter before it escalates.
"The Kamba and Maasai communities have for a long time lived in peace but this time around there is a looming clash between the two communities due to cattle that have invaded our farms in Kinanie if something is not done soon," said Mutivo.
