Machakos County Deputy Commissioner Joseph Ole Leina has directed chiefs and other local administrators to intensify the fight against illicit brews.

Speaking when he toured Athi River and Mlolongo towns on Friday, Leina said that illicit brewing is still rampant in some areas of the county. He asked the police to intensify swoops on illicit brew dens that are still brewing illegal alcohol.

Leina said that brewers of illegal alcohol will be dealt with accordingly.

“Illicit brewing remains a big challenge here in Mlolongo and some other areas. I have directed the police to intensify crackdowns,” he said.

He also asked members of the public to provide information on brewers saying that illicit brewing has ruined many families.

Leina said that Machakos County will not allow illegal brewers adding that they are working with relevant government agencies to tame the vice.

At the same time, the deputy commissioner also warned bars and pubs allegedly selling alcohol to teenagers. He said that cases of teenagers found drunk and in possession of alcoholic drinks have been reported.

The commissioner said that police have launched investigations into bars selling alcohol to children.

He alleged that  a section of youths in the county have resorted to abusing drugs and urged leaders to intervene to stop drug abuse.
