Kiambu County Commissioner Esther Maina has criticised the Kenya Bureau of Standards for increased sub-standard brews in the county.

Speaking at a public gathering in Tigoni on Tuesday, Maina claimed that Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) issues stickers with standardisation marks on them to alcohol manufacturers even before they manufacture the said brews.

"Here in Kiambu we do not have illicit brews. What we have are second generation brews. KEBS is to blame for the existence of sub-standard alcohol in the market because they do not subject these brews to any tests. They leave the brewers to decide what is good for the consumers," said Maina.

The commissioner said that as administrators they are unable to determine what is standard and what is not when faced with that question.

Maina also called for the adherence of the rule of law and condemned Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu for raiding bars and pouring alcohol in Kabete.

"Waititu's action were illegal and unacceptable. This is just a destruction of people's properties who are operating within the law," she said.
