A 20 year old man was on Friday rescued by police after an angry mob descended on him for allegedly raping an elderly woman in her house in Lari.
According to the residents, the young man was an employee of the 78 year old woman and he would feed her cattle and ensure her compound is clean.
Confirming the incident, Lari OCS Senior Inspector Peter Ouko said that the man is said to have committed the offence on Monday this week and escaped.
He added that residents had reported the rape incident and police had launched a manhunt for the suspect.
The OCS said that the woman was admitted at the Kiambaa Hospital as she suffered injuries during the incident.
However, he revealed that the suspect was spotted by people that knew he had committed the crime in a market. He said that mob started beating him mercilessly.
He added that police in patrol came to the rescue of the suspect.
Ouko warned the residents against taking action into their own hands as it was a crime on its own.
He advised them to instead bring the culprits to the police station so that legal action can be taken against them.
"We have confirmed that the man arrested was the man who is suspected to have raped the old woman on Monday. He is in police custody and will face the wrath of the law," assured Ouko.
