A 26-year-old man said to have confessed of being an al-Shabaab operative was on Wednesday released on bail by a Nakuru court.
Thomas Mugendi alias Mohammed Hussein Ali allegedly attempted committing suicide using a pistol belonging to a Kenya Defence Forces soldier identified as Smith Kimanzi Njeru on October 18.
The prosecution said claims that Mugendi was an al-Shabaab militant are still under investigation.
His lawyer, Ochang Ajigo urged the court to also make an order that his property that was confiscated by the police be returned, including his national ID.
Mugendi appeared in court on October 21, limping as a result of a bullet lodged in his knee after allegedly trying to shoot himself at St Monica Church in Nakuru.
The court had then ordered the accused to be taken to a hospital so that the bullet could be removed.
The incident is said to have happened as the church service was ongoing after he allegedly decided to confess that he was an al-Shabaab operative, which caused much disturbance and disrupted the service.
He was released on a surety bond of Sh30,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh15,000.
