Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has urged the national government to improve infrastructure in public schools to boost education.
Speaking at Kalyet High School during the launch of the Bicycle Education Empowerment Programmes, Mandago said that infrastructure development remains poor in most schools within the county.
He said that poor performance in national examinations has been attributed to the poor state of classrooms, laboratories and other facilities. He stated that education will improve if learners have a conducive environment for their studies.
“There is need for the national government to take necessary steps and improve on infrastructure development in public schools,” he said.
The governor also asked the national government to start more programs that will boost education.
He said that students in public schools need enough resources to compete fairly with their counterparts in private schools.
Mandago said that his government will work with the national government and stakeholders to boost learning in schools in the county. He noted that the county government has initiated some programmes meant to mentor school children.
He added that the county government has established Early Childhood Education (ECD) centres across the county saying that access to education must be made available and affordable to Kenyans.
The governor called for heavy investment in education noting that it is through education that the society will fight poverty and register development.
Over 150 bicycles were donated by the World Bicycle Relief and World Vision to students who reside far away from schools.
