Youths have been advised to get the relevant documentation and experience if they want to engage in the bodaboda business.
According to Marioshoni ward MCA Agnes Salim, lack of licence and experience has led to untold suffering in the sector.
Speaking at Elburgon Shopping centre on Friday during her monthly meet the people tour, Marioshoni ward MCA Agnes Salim called on bodaboda riders to ensure they possess a valid riding licence before getting into the business for safety purposes.
She cited the rising number of accidents being witnessed in the area as a result of young inexperienced riders whose aim is to make quick money.
“Riding is not all about moving that motorcycle from point A to point B, you need to be courageous, steady and have respect for other road users, something that is none of the business for our boys,” she said.
She said although the industry has helped solved unemployment, she accused some elements for the decay being witnessed in the sector.
“You drop out of school in form 2 or 3 then in two days’ time; you are on the road, where did you get the experience leave alone the time to attend driving school?” she wondered.
Salim promised to work with area Sacco chairmen to ensure that a formidable way is used to have all riders in the area acquire licences and get the relevant knowledge on the importance of adhering to traffic laws.
“We’ve got to deal with this thing in a more inclusive manner because the rate at which accidents are happening is worth a concern, let Sacco chairmen liaise with my office so that we formulate ways of how to go about it,” she promised.
Two people are nursing serious head injuries at the Rift Valley General Hospital while one died on the spot after being involved in a head on accident in the area last week.
