Security agencies in Mombasa County have launched investigations after it emerged that a new gang has been using fake police Identification Cards to conduct their criminal activities.

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa said the terror gang has been impersonating police officers using fake IDs to carry out crimes in the county and harass the residents.

Mr Marwa said they believe the group is behind last week’s shooting at a bank in Bondeni area where a police officer was shot dead and his G3 rifle stolen by the assailants.

“These gangs are walking around with fake IDs that have National Police Service colours, pretending to be security officers but we are now on the lookout,” said Mr Marwa.

Marwa was speaking to journalists in his office on Monday together with Coast Regional Police Commandant Francis Wanjohi.

Mr Wanjohi said the terror group has been behind several attacks in the county and they conduct their criminal activities wearing Buibuis. The commandant claimed that the gang hide their firearms in the religious wear.

“The gang has been harassing locals and has carried out various crimes in the county. We have launched investigations to arrest the gang members and establish those funding the group.”
