The police were dispersing student political aspirants and their supporters who had taken their campaign convoys to the Kisumu-Busia Highway. Confirming the incident, Maseno OCPD Peter Omanwa said that the police took the measure since the student’s campaign convoy had caused a traffic jam on the Kisumu-Busia highway.

“This had slowed down the movement of vehicles on the highway,” he said.

However, the students expressed their disappointment in the police activities; they engaged the police in a hide and seek game where they threw back the tear gas canisters at the police then ran back to their hiding places.

“They do not want us to hold peaceful campaigns,” a supporter hanging on a campaign lorry said.

Nonetheless, the aspirants continued wooing voters and supporters inside the campus as outside the confines of the University were not safe for their motorcades.

Heavy presence of armed police has been deployed around the institution to ensure peace prevails as the investigations on a recent fire that burned down the university’s finance offices continue.
