Maseno University students were forced to cancel their Kamukunji that was scheduled for Monday evening after events turned sour.
The students blocked the Busia-Kisumu Highway for some time causing paralysis in the transport sector on the route forcing police to lob teargas canisters at them in order to restore sanity at the place.
However, the students maintained peace afterwards though the police continued pushing them back into the institution's compound.
This caused the scheduled public rally (Kamukunji) in Siriba Campus coming to a halt as all the aspirants were locked inside College Campus across the main road. By 7pm, police officers had entered the institution's gate and were engaged in running battles with the students who maintained that they had been peaceful before the police came.
The unrest is reported to have been caused by supporters of one of the aspirants who was not cleared to vie for the position of the Presidency and whose supporters demanded that he be included in the electoral process.
Supporters of the candidate, Ricky Thomas Nyakatch camped at the varsity's main gate waiting for him to appear but his convoy was reported to have been stopped on the way by police.
Many students who were inside the university could not get out and the ones out the gate could not get in due to confrontation by police officers.
There has been tension around Maseno University following the burning down of their administration block by unknown people, Thursday morning.
