Concern has been raised over the number of children dropping out of school to beg along SiribaRoad in Maseno.
Students in Maseno University claim that some of these children are being sent by their parents to beg along the road, which is usually busy throughout the day.
They say it has become common to see young girls and boys spend the whole day from one point to another on the road asking for Sh10 and Sh5.
Residents who are mostly students now say the children have become a menace as they continuously nag them everyday.
"They have even developed a mechanism to maximise the possibility of earning. They approach one when there is a large crowd ahead or behind you and start begging, to avoid the embarrassment most have been forced to comply," one student says.
David Otina a second year student says he has been embarrassed a number of times when he gave a boy Sh10 but the boy continued following him demanding for more.
“It was a very embarrassing moment as that was the only money I had at the moment after I had taken lunch,” said Otina.
Some students say they now fear for their safety.
Nancy Tallam says a group of these boys kept trailing her threatening her to contribute or face their wrath.
“A group of five boys ambushed me and demanded that I give them what I had or they would beat me up. I was terrified and forced to give them Sh100 to let me go,” said Tallam.
