The residents claim the rise might be attributed to the issuing of tea bonuses which is set to take place in two months time.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at Mataara shopping centre, the residents who were mainly women claimed that their husbands have abandoned their family responsibilities for the prostitutes.

They said their efforts to fight illicit brews may not have paid off as men have now found another haven and are continuing to shun their responsbilities.

"What was the purpose of pouring the illicit brews if our men can't still be found at home? They have now turned to sex workers,” said Jane Wambui, a resident.

The residents claimed that many of the prostitutes are non-locals.

"They do not come from here and their plan is to drain our husbands' tea money,” said Jecinta Waceke, a resident.

Mataara Sub-Chief Paul Gatuura said the women will be vetted to establish the kind of business they were operating.

"All I can say is that no idler or anybody doing illegitimate business will be allowed here. We are going to look into those complaints and appropriate action will be taken,” said Gatuura.
