Matatu operators and passengers at Matuu bus station have expressed their concern over the closure of the public toilets by Machakos County officials.

Speaking on Wednesday at the station, the touts and drivers said that it was a sanitation concern that the main toilets they normally use at the bus stage were closed forcing some of them to relieve themselves on the surrounding walls.

The operators claimed that it has been over a week since the toilets were closed and yet they have been paying the usual fee.

"We have been paying the usual fee hoping they will open the toilets. The officials are no where to be found and we expect them to open them as we are forced to use the toilets outside the stage which is time consuming," said Richard Mumo, a driver.

According to Mumo, they were told that the toilets were closed due to the filling of the sewage tanks which were supposed to be emptied immediately.

Efforts to get a comment from the sub-county office bore no fruit as the town clerk was away and the officer concerned could not be reached.

The operators are now calling on the government department concerned with the same to fast track the exercise.
