Matatus caused havoc on Monday at Maseno University when they changed their usual route in order to evade police check point stationed next to the Maseno law courts.

The vehicles diverted from the normal Kisumu-Busiahighway and branched at Maseno School to Siriba road before connecting the Kisumu Busia main road at the University main gate.

They were being driven at very high speed along the tarmacked busy Siriba road full of bodaboda operators and students giving the students a hard time in accessing their lecture halls.

Two weeks ago the same incident happened, causing congestion at Siriba road inconveniencing the students’ only way to their classes.

John Bundi, a fourth year student complained about this, he says this matatus are rough and rowdy causing tension and commotion as they are driven at very high speeds as the conductors yell at students out of the way using obscene languages.

Maseno OCS, Eric Langat on behalf of the traffic commandant said the matatu drivers have taken their irresponsibility too far and warned them of stringent measures if found using the same road again.

"I want to warn those matatu operators to desist from inconveniencing students safety and class work and focus on using the set routes for their day to day activities," said Langat.

He added that the government is very clear that persons caught interfering with the process of learning is liable to punishment equal to the risk he/ she puts the academics in.

One of the lectures condemned the act saying it was unethical and risky for the students and Maseno fraternity at large.
