Students from Matutu PAG secondary school from Kitutu Masaba constituency have a reason to smile after a renowned politician and aspiring MP donated equipment worth Sh500,000 to the biology and chemistry laboratories.
Speaking when he paid the institution a courtesy call on Sunday, Victor Ogeto challenged teachers and students from the institution and other institutions in Nyamira County to put emphasis on science subjects in a bid to improve their performances in the national exams.
Ogeto further challenged the Ministry of education to come up with strict rules aimed at governing errant teachers who are said to abscond their duties during official class time.
“I have donated these chemicals and lab equipment as a challenge to you students and teachers to better your performance in both local and national exams. The performance hasn't been up to standard and this is the time to change our attitude,” he said.
According to Ogeto, the shortage of science related subjects in institutions around the region is part of the reason why the institutions from the region were performing dismally.
“Sometimes I don’t really blame the dismal performance in science subjects due to scarcity of facilities. Some of our institutions have few teachers who can help our children. Time has come for Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to work in speed and deploy more teachers to the institutions especially in Masaba North sub-county,” he said.
He promised to carry out a similar exercise in several other institutions from the region in a period of one year and urged the county government to support education in the region.
