Mavoko Member of Parliament, Patrick Makau has called on youths from his constituency to instil a culture of working hard in themselves so as to better their futures.
Addressing journalists in Athi River Town on Friday, Makau said some of the youths from the region were not working hard hence depended on hand outs from politicians.
"I in good fate as the area MP call on all youth from Mavoko constituency to instil a culture of hard work in them and stop the habit of begging for hand outs from politicians," said Makau.
According to Makau, a number of the youth had formed a habit of gate crashing functions within the constituency without invitation to harass politicians.
"Such youth are an embarrassment not only to the politicians who mostly are their targets but to the entire community,” said Makau.
Makau said this habit was mostly done by lazy individuals arguing that there are lots of opportunities in the constituency which can earn youth reasonable livelihoods.
He urged the youth to instead seek job opportunities in the available projects in a bid to improving their future living standards.
The MP said handouts are seasonal and not sustainable thus the lazy individuals end up engaging in criminal activities so as to earn a living.
He advised the youth to take advantage of the available public projects and funds such as Youth Enterprise Fund, Uwezo and Women Funds so as to improve their living standards.
Esther Mirugi, a youth from Mavoko constituency, noted that the legislator's concerns were true adding that majority of the youth who depended on hand outs were drug addicts.
Mirugi said there are groups of young energetic men in the region who could not engage in any productive activities to make their own legitimate money.
The MP said he was ready and willing to support youth projects as he had always done stating it is more credible to train a young man on how to fish and help him acquire a fishing net for sustainability instead of giving fish which he eats and forgets at the same minute.
