A youth group from Mekenene ward in Borabu constituency has a reason to smile after area MCA on Tuesday donated a 1hectare piece of land to expand their banana planting business.
Mr Alfayo Ngeresam, the MCA, said Mekenene Youth Group has been leading by example by engaging in modern farming and consulting experts.
Ngeresa lauded the 25 member group and urged them to spear head civic education in the region to have more young people embracing modern farming other than depending on formal employment.
“When young people come together to execute an idea, it is important that they are appreciated. I am very pleased with the team because it encourages the younger generation that is why I have decided to donate land for them to develop. This is the right way to go other than depending on the formal business,” Ngeresa said.
The MCA further called upon the Department of Youth in Nyamira County to make loans accessible to such groups to better farming and reduce unemployment rates.
“We have many youth groups in the county which should be aided to combat the unemployment rate. The Ministry of Youths should make the loans accessible to entrepreneurs,” he added.
Group Chairman Mr Erick Nyagaka welcomed the move by the MCA and promised to expand the farming.
“I am happy that we will be able to increase our productivity having acquired extra land. We will be able to meet the high market demand of bananas in the local market,” Nyagaka said.
