Over 100 motorbike riders from Gesima ward in Nyamira have benefited with driving licences after attending a one-month training courtesy of area the MCA.
Speaking on Tuesday after issuing of the licences to the riders, mostly youths, MCA Ken Atuti urged them to follow traffic rules in a bid to avert many accidents that are reported in the area that have reportedly led to the death of over five people in the last two weeks.
He urged the police to deal decisively with motorbike riders without necessary documents since most of them are said to be operating illegally.
“I decided to bring this exercise because most of you had never attended a driving school. I believe you have interacted with the experts and the most important thing is to observe the traffic rules. The police should deal with those who have persistently violated the rules leading to the death of a number of residents,” he said.
The outspoken county assembly lawmaker said the second shift of training and issuing of licenses will target another 200 residents.
“This is a continuous exercise because I will be doing it on my account. We want to see more youths joining the exercise and I promise that we will select them fairly to ensure the region balance is observed,” he added.
In addition, the MCA said the most disciplined motorbike operator will be rewarded undisclosed amount of cash at the end of every month.
