Hospital Ward MCA Mwangi Wamwangi on Thursday led the residents of Majengo Estate, Thika in cleaning the area ahead of the El Nino rains.
The exercise that brought together the estate's residents involved the cleaning of ditches, unblocking of sewer lines, clearing of thickets around houses among other activities.
Wamwangi said that this was the second time he was leading such an exercise in the area this year, adding that this time residents were doing it to cushion themselves from effects of blocked drainages.
"Residents are aware that the county government can not be able to move to every estate to do the clean up yet the El Nino rains are about to fall,” said Wamwangi.
He added, "That is why when we asked them to come out for the clean up, they did so despite today being a working day.”
Residents who spoke to journalists said that they were doing it for their own good.
"If the drainage system is not okay when the rains fall, we are the people to suffer the consequences of the floods,” said Kenneth Kamau, a resident.
Irene Njeri, also a resident, said that she always comes out for such activities noting that they benefit the whole estate.
A similar clean up exercise is scheduled to take place in the neighbouring Umoja Estate on Saturday.
