A Nyamira Member of the County Assembly has found himself in an unfamiliar position after a leading aspirant accused him of diverting over Sh1.5 M meant for construction of a health centre.
Mr Ken Atuti of Gesima ward is accused of diverting Sh1.5 million meant for construction of an eight-roomed structure to host Kambini Health Centre only to reduce it to four rooms.
Speaking at Kambini during a fundraiser for Kambini Youth Group on Tuesday, Mr Timothy Ogato said the MCA had deliberately hijacked the construction process after compromising the county government to delegate the work to his leadership.
“Someone has to be held accountable because we are aware that the county dished out Sh3.5M for the construction of a standard health centre but what we are seeing is just a very small structure. I have records showing how Sh1.5 M got lost through his hands,” Omariba said.
According to him, the contractors (Gesima Building Society) had conceded given only 2M to complete the structure which in Omariba’s view was too small to serve the population.
“The number of residents is increasing and I don’t think this small structure can serve people. I have documents showing how the MCA paid contractors Sh2 million instead of the Sh3.5 million allocated by the county and I am ready to face him in court,” he said.
Atuti has however rubbished the allegations, accusing Ogato of peddling malicious rumours.
“It is quite unfortunate that someone can link me to misusing of public funds. The figure he is quoting was the initial quotation before the department of health reduced it to Sh2 million and I think I cleared everything. Let them give me humble time to launch the facility,” he said.
