At least six Members of County Assembly from Nyamira County government have blamed the national government for the current development stalemate that is being witnessed in the region.

Speaking on Sunday during a fundraiser at Nyamoteneneio catholic, they claimed the national treasury had failed to release Sh1 billion meant for development since the decentralisation of power in 2013.

The MCAs claimed the national treasury failed to release the funds in time for the purpose of funding developmental projects, an issue that has ignited accusations and counter accusations from other elected leaders especially the MPs.

“As you can see, the county is really struggling to catch up in terms of development. Many of our projects have stalled because the national government has failed to respond in time and in fact, they owe Nyamira debts amounting to Sh1 billion,” said Beattah Omanga of Bogichora.

His Gesima counterpart, Ken Atuti accused MPs for failing to execute their mandate of challenging the national government to release funds in time besides urging them to desist from constant politicking.

“The MPs are responsible for the stalemate we are experiencing. They have failed to challenge the national government to disburse funds in time and that is why the county government is struggling. It’s important for them to stop politicking,” he added.

According to them, the locally collected revenue which amounts to Sh600 million and a little amount from the national government were used for recurrent expenditure hence the predicament.

“We urge residents to remain patient as we tackle this problem. We are using up to 80 per cent of the money we get for recurrent expenditure instead of development,” said Alfayo Mwongeresa, Chepilat MCA.
