Maseno mkokoteni operators are reaping big this week courtesy of students travelling from Maseno University.
A majority of the students are employing the services of mkokoteni operators as they are cheaper, convenient and can more luggage at the same time.
A spot check at the Maseno University gate showed many operators lined up waiting for students.
“This week is the best for business because customers are in plenty. There is no going home without money. This doesn't happen everyday," said Joseph Owena.
The operators charge between Sh100 and Sh150 for the luggage from the students’ hostels up to the matatu stage.
Speaking to Hivisasa on Monday evening the operators said that business in the last month has been low and the end of semester at the university has boosted their earnings.
They have taken advantage of the fact that bodaboda operators are not allowed to operate within Maseno University premises.
However, despite being a good week for the mkokoteni operators, the students as main customers are complaining of exploitation.
“Honestly charging more than sh100 for a distance of less than 100 meters is a bit too high, but we have no option but to pay," said Henry Njogu a student at Maseno University.
