Traders at the Molo main market have called on the county government to stick to its pledge of restructuring the garbage collection system at the market saying that they risk contracting diseases as a result of the pilling garbage.
Led by their chairperson Mr Peterson Mwaniki, the traders lamented how they were not gaining from the tax they remit to the county government on a daily basis.
In a crisis meeting held at the market earlier on Tuesday, the traders called on the county physical planners to rethink the market’s plan especially on the issue of collecting of garbage.
“As much as we thank governor Kinuthia Mbugua for erecting public toilets at the market, let him also look into the garbage problem because it’s really hindering service delivery,” Mwaniki noted.
The traders, a majority who were women dealing with vegetables and fruits complained an influx of flies at the stinking collection point which was making their customers shy away for fear of a disease outbreak that might emanate from the flies.
“Sales are slowly going down by day because our customers are afraid to buy the produce with flies all over. The rains have even made the situation more pathetic,” Penina Wairimu, a trader, said.
The traders are now calling on Molo Sub County Commissioner to present their grievances to the governor’s office, saying that their health was at stake.
“Not that we are totally unhappy with our county government’s efforts as far as service delivery is concerned, this is an impeding health crisis because we are always at the market for the better part of the day on a daily basis,” Mwaniki noted.
