Traders at the Molo Market have threatened to hold demonstrations to compel the county government to streamline garbage collection in the market.

According to the traders who spoke to hivisasa, the environment in and around the market is not conducive for business and they are at risk of contracting diseases.

They are complaining about huge  piles of garbage that the say lies uncollected for a long time adding that their pleas have not been heard yet.

“We are tax payers who need quality service from our county because it’s our money that is supposed to serve us. We are not begging, it’s our right,” said Gicheru Mwangi, the chairperson of the Molo Market Association.

The traders accused county officials of neglecting them despite paying their daily levies as required.

“The County Askaris are only concentrating on collecting their daily levies our working conditions are deplorable. We are ready to hold demonstrations,” he added.

Residents at the nearby residential houses complained of strong stench coming from the garbage heap saying that it was making their lives unbearable.

“We are living like slaves in our own houses because we cannot open the windows. This place is too smelly and will soon affect our families,” said Sam Kichagua, a landlord in Molo town.

The traders threatened to boycott the daily levies if the condition is not addressed saying that the market is unhealthy and the rains had made it worse.
