Police in Naivasha are investigating a group that is soliciting money from the public claiming that it is going to buy them land. The group, calling itself Uhuru Mashinani, claimed it is buying parcels of land and demand Sh500 from every individual. The group has allegedly been in operation for the last two months and is suspected to have registered over 300 people in Karagita, Kihoto and Kanjo areas of Naivasha. According to Samuel Maina, one of the area residents, the individuals have also been asked to deposit Sh500 to the bank as an upfront fee for purchasing the land. “We were asked to pay the money in the bank. We are, however, worried since we do not know how genuine the people are,” he added. The residents expressed fears that they could be victims of another pyramid scheme. The people say that no other communication has ever taken place since Uhuru Mashinani registered them. The receipts indicated that the Uhuru Mashinani team is located at Blessed House, Ngara road in Nairobi. Another victim, John Mwangi, claimed that the residents were told if they registered, they would get direct access to the president. “We were told that this is the personal project of Uhuru that seeks to empower people at the grassroots level. This does not seem to be the case,” he added. Naivasha superintendent of police Robinson Maingi said the police have already started investigations regarding the group. “We have received several complaints from members of the public about the organisation. We are trying to establish whether the group is genuine. However, we would like to request Kenyans to be very careful before joining such organisations and to do proper background checks,” he added. Attempts to reach the organisation on the number provided on the receipts were unfruitful as the phones went unanswered.
