The flower industry in Naivasha was not interrupted on Monday as flower firm workers ignored calls to attend Saba Saba rally and instead reported to work as usual.

According to the Kenya Flower Council (KFC) chief executive Jane Ngige, flower firms remained open for the better part of day amid tensions caused by the Saba Saba rally.

“We are happy that business in most flower firms was not interrupted amid heightened political temperatures in Naivasha. However, some workers especially in Karagita estate had fled for fear of being attacked,” said Ngugi.

Speaking on Monday, Ngige said business went on as usual as workers reported for duty.

The KFC boss attributed the calmness in major parts of Naivasha to massive peace campaigns that have been going on for weeks before yesterday’s rally.

There were reports that flower farmers and workers were leaving Naivasha for fear of attacks in the runup to Saba Saba rally.

The flower industry was among the most affected sectors during the 2007/2008 post-poll skirmishes that rocked the country.

Learning and other businesses in most parts of the town also continued uninterrupted as youths took the initiative to sensitise residents on the importance of keeping peace.

Naivasha police boss Charles Kortok confirmed that no major incident happened and urged residents to continue keeping peace for the sake of development.
