Naivasha MP John Kihagi has assured residents of their security following rumours of alleged possible attacks.

Reports went round the town on Friday that unknown people were dropping leaflets warning of attacks at specific points in the town.

In a statement to the press, Kihagi urged residents not to fear but continue with their activities. He added that security personnel were on high alert to avert any danger.

“I want to urge Naivasha residents not to fear since we have enough security to deal with criminals. The authorities are also investigating the source of the leaflets,” he said.

The legislator went ahead to warn those spreading hate messages in the county, saying they will be dealt with accordingly when captured.

Kihagi blamed the tension in the area on the countrywide rallies conducted by opposition leaders. He supported calls to have all political rallies cancelled, saying it will help quell the tension and avert animosity among Kenyans.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga last week cancelled the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy’s (Cord) rally planned for Sunday at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium to mourn the Mpeketoni victims.

The MP said Naivasha is cosmopolitan and it will accommodate every Kenyan living in the area.

On Thursday, leaflets were circulated warning some communities in the county to leave within seven days.

County commissioner Mohammed Birik on Friday said security had been beefed up. He said that criminals and people with ill motives would not be allowed to divide residents.

He warned that police will not spare anyone involved in the spread of hate messages.
