The Nakuru County assembly has allocated Sh30 million for the purchase of sanitary towels in the next financial year.

This allocation is meant to assure that schoolgirls continue with their education without any interruptions.

In Murindat, Gilgil, Naivasha, Solai and Subukia, there has been a large number of girls dropping out of school due to lack of sanitary towels.

"Most girls miss school for almost three days a month which makes them lose a lot in the syllabus,” said Jacinta Wachira, principal of Kanjuiri secondary school.

“The sanitary towels provision will go a long way in ensuring that the girls do no miss out,” she added.

Nakuru County has a large number of needy and poor families who can't afford three meals a day leave alone catering for their daughters’ sanitary towels.

Some non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and well-wishers have been supporting the girls in the county by providing sanitary towels in the schools.

Masterpeace Nakuru, an organisation that involves community development, has included sanitary towels in their project. The organisation donates the pads to needy schools or vulnerable communities.

"We have been partnering with media houses, individuals and well-wishers to help our girls stay in school. Last year we donated sanitary towels in Kaptembwa slums within Nakuru town and we intend to donate them to our IDPs from Solai and Subukia,” said one of the volunteers, Jane Musyoki.

She added that the Sh30 million is still little compared to the number of girls in the 55 wards of Nakuru County.
