Nakuru County commissioner Mohammed Birik has assured residents of their safety ahead of the opposition coalition’s Saba Saba rally.

Speaking to journalists in Nakuru on Wednesday, Birik indicated that security measures have been put in place to ensure residents are safe.

He said police officers are conducting 24-hour patrols, adding that criminals planning to take advantage of the political rally will not be spared.

“We have beefed up surveillance and we want to ask residents to feel free to conduct their businesses,” said the commissioner.

Birik noted that at least 18 people have been arrested in connection with hate leaflets that have been circulating in Naivasha, Nakuru, Molo and Gilgil.

He revealed that the suspects are being interrogated and will be arraigned in court soon.

Commenting on reports that some communities are fleeing Naivasha over the planned Saba Saba rally, the commissioner confirmed that indeed some people were leaving the sub-county. He however, urged them to stay put, saying that security is high.

The commissioner warned those planning to instigate violence or any form of crime ahead of the Monday rallies, saying they will be dealt with accordingly.
