Nakuru Chamber of Commerce chairman Kamau Njoroge has raised the alarm over the influx of counterfeit  goods into the market.

Speaking from his Nakuru office on Thursday, Njoroge said the counterfeits are cheap which is supporting them on the market.

Njoroge asked the government to investigate and deal with counterfeit goods.

“Our markets have become a dump for cheap and counterfeit goods mostly from Asia. The Kenya Bureau of Statistics (Kebs), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and other government agencies must step up their efforts and deal with counterfeits in the country,” he said.

Njoroge stated that consumer safety is at risk with increased counterfeits in the market.

He called for streamlining and review of counterfeit laws to curb the menace. He said that the current laws are not adequate and have seen the vice escalate.

Njoroge urged consumers to be careful of the products they buy from retailers alleging that some could be trading in counterfeits.
