The Nakuru County government has buried 89 unclaimed bodies since the beginning of the year.

Nakuru Chief Public Health Officer Mr Samuel King’ori claimed that majority of the unclaimed bodies were those of infants and the elderly.

“Both groups are dumped by their relatives or well wishers who go missing immediately after that,” said King’ori

King’ori pointed out that despite waiving off mortuary fee and all the other expenses involved in burying process, majority of their kin refused to pick up the bodies.

He is now calling on the police to help in the identification process.

“The police have the finger prints of all the adults in their data base. They can use the information to track down the relatives to the deceased,” he added.

King’ori said that most of the victims were male accident victims.

He said that the disposal of the bodies has been an expensive affair to the county government.

“The county has to cater for the expenses of the storage, the hospital bills and mortuary expenses. We also incur a lot of losses trying to track down their relatives and we are very limited in this area,” he noted.

King’ori was speaking to the press in his office on Friday where he also called on mobile telecommunications company to help in the tracking of the relatives.
