Matatu Owners Association (MOA) leaders in Nakuru County have reacted to the eviction of matatus from the county’s Central Business District (CBDs) without consultations over the matter.
Led by their chairman Stephen Muli, they met the Nakuru County Roads Public Works and Transport CeC Eng Maina Kairu and Lands CeC, Rachel Maina, on Thursday where they expressed their dissatisfaction with the unilateral decisions.
He said, “We are afraid that we were not fully involved in the eviction plans that were aimed at decongesting the town’s CBDs by providing alternative termini for the matatus. The process has been marred by hitches as mutual agreements were not reached.”
“We the leaders, are ready to work with the county government in streamlining operations in the town to oversee smooth transition in the matatu industry,” Muli added.
Among the Saccos affected include Precious, Njoro Operators, Njoro Line, Mau- Narok, Naloki, Shabab, Prestige Shuttle and Northway.
Incidentally, some matatus are still operating from the CBD thereby calling for more efficient means to address the matter.
The leaders were however urged to be patient and assist in the plans of decongesting the town to enable free flow of traffic in the area.
“I urge all matatu owners to cooperate with the county government as we look for a suitable solution to this menace. We are looking forward decongesting the town,” Eng Kairu added.
