Nakuru Members of County Assembly (MCAs) spent Sh198 million on foreign trips in the 2013-2014 financial year, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has said.
Ngunjiri accused the MCAs of preferring travel at the expense of engaging in development projects for the locals.
“We are concerned that MCAs used over Sh190 million for the trips abroad. This money could have been channeled to development,” he said.
The MP said he is in possession of documents that show how the MCAs used the money on foreign trips. He said prioritising foreign trips will not address issues facing common people at the grass-root levels.
The legislator said that there is need for stiffer measures to be implemented to prevent misuse of public funds.
Ngunjiri, who was speaking at Kagato primary school, called on the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to regulate MCAs’ financial activities.
Last week, a section of Nakuru MCAs lashed out at the SRC’s threat to slash their allowances due to misuse of funds on trips.
Led by majority leader Samuel Waithuki, the ward representatives accused SRC of double standards, saying they are entitled to allowances just like any other county leaders.
