Over 50 kiosks along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway were on Tuesday demolished by Nakuru County government askaris affecting the lives of more than 100 traders.
Following this, the traders engaged the police in running battles and later lit bonfires along the busy highway, protesting the demolitions.
The anti-riot police used teargas and fired shots in the air to disperse the irate crowd. Furious, Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama asked the traders to start reconstructing the structures.
The MP and other legislators present accused the government of taking action without consulting them.
"The governor and his askaris should be held responsible for this demolition. We will oppose this move until the traders are shown where to relocate to," Arama said.
The traders said they have been operating in the area for more than 5 years
Arama promised to donate iron sheets to the traders that will go towards rebuilding their structures.
