Nakuru GK prison has gone for a week without water after the Nakuru Water Sewerage and Sanitation Company (Nawassco) disconnected the supply following an unpaid bill amounting to Sh7 million. The officer-in-charge of the GK prison, James Sawe, said the water bills have not been paid for the last seven months, prompting the water supplying company to discontinue the service. In a telephone interview, Sawe said that officers have been purchasing water from outside the facility at Sh5,000 a day, adding that the prison serves over 2,000 inmates and lack of water is becoming a crisis in itself. The officer said that the problem of non-payment of water bill came as a result of re-organisation in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Nawassco acting managing director James Nga’ng’a said water supply to the facility will not be reinstated until the debt is fully paid.
