Nakuru residents are seeking a breakdown of the Sh500 million budget set to be used by the county for elnino mitigation.

They argue that the budget is exaggerated and will create a loophole for stealing public funds.

“We want to know the specifics of this budget and not just a blanket figure that was given by the country government,” said Peter Mwangi.

Mwangi said that there were no planned programs that were set aside to curb the effects of the Elnino rains.

Francis Mwaura claimed that the county would squander the cash meant to benefit people affected by the heavy rains.

“After the rains we will seek accountability but nothing will come forth,” he added

They were speaking to the press on Tuesday in Nakuru where they challenged the county to produce their proposed budget for the use of the cash.

In a statement to news rooms, Nakuru county Governor Kinuthia Mbugua had said that the cash will be used to purchase equipment, drugs and logistics.

“We have already formed a committee to handle the disaster. It is comprised of officials from the county government, the Kenya Red cross, the Media and the Meteorological department,” said the governor.

He added that areas surrounding Lake Nakuru, Naivasha and Elementaita are also Elnino hot spots.
