Nakuru County residents accused police of corruption and harassment before the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

On the other hand, police officers complained to the IPOA about harassment by their seniors and dismissal from their stations.

The two groups were speaking at Nakuru old Town Hall during an outreach and sensitisation campaign in Nakuru County organised by IPOA.

IPOA board member Mr Vicent Kiptoo promised citizens and the police that IPOA will be seeking to minimise conflicts experienced through education.

“The public has raised corruption allegations within the traffic police and we’re going to ensure that there is a working mechanism with Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to ensure that the officers caught will not return to work until cleared,” he said.

He also noted that police have problems that they want IPOA to address especially during vetting. He called for fair treatment of the junior police officers during transfers as their families are deeply affected.

The police have claimed that they are not getting a fair hearing when being vetted and they end up losing their jobs stating that the institution should be concerned with their rights.

Nakuru Stakeholders Chairman Wycliffe Ageso urged IPOA to investigate the police and do an overhaul to reduce cases of corruption and harassment.

“Police are picking our boys and arresting innocent people within the towns. We want this harassment to stop. There are also police officers who own businesses in town as a result of picking bribes,” he said
