Nakuru county Speaker Susan Kihika has started an internship program for youths in the county to curb the high unemployment rates in the area.

The programme, which kicked off this week, intends to bring graduates from various universities to give their knowledge and expertise.

Kihika said that the initial programme will start with five graduants and slowly expand to accommodate more.

“We will give them a small stipend at the end of the month. We need to give them a platform to showcase their knowledge and expertise,” she added.

The speaker lamented the requirement by companies for people who had experience yet none was willing to give it in the first place.

Kihika pointed out that the youths were neglected in the recent appointment by the president which raised a row on social media.

She appealed to cooperate companies in the area to consider giving the youths an opportunity to learn from them.

“The youths are our future. We need to safeguard their knowledge. We do not want the same skills to be transported abroad because we cannot utilize them properly. We need to empower the youths in our area by ensuring that they get to know how businesses operate,” she said.
