At least five fishponds will be built in every ward in Nakuru County to create jobs and boost economic growth, deputy governor Joseph Ruttoh has said.

Speaking in Naivasha after leading an exercise to restock Lake Naivasha, Ruttoh said the county government is keen to promote fish farming in the county.

“We will establish fish ponds in every ward in Nakuru to boost the economic output of the county. Farmers will also be enlightened on fish farming,” he said.

He said that the fish sector has created employment opportunities for the youth and the county government has set aside enough funds to promote the sector.

He said that the county recognizes fish farming as an important economic sector that has the potential of transforming and empowering residents.

The deputy governor indicated that restocking of Lake Naivasha will be done after every three months in order to increase fish production.

The lake was recently restocked with 50,000 fingerlings that were bought by fishermen at a cost of Sh300,000.

Just recently, the fishermen called on the government to review the annual three month ban which they said was affecting their source of livelihood.

The fishermen said the lake had enough fish and there was no need to ban fishing in the lake as the fish population was sustainable.
