University students from Nakuru County have confirmed their participation in the forthcoming Eastern African Community university students’ debate.
Students from Mt Kenya University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST), Kenya Institute of Studies in Criminal Justices (KICJ) and Westmont College have confirmed their participation.
KICJ Nakuru town principal Edwin Okoth said: “We are grateful since a group of our students will participate in the event. Our students are happy, especially those taking criminology courses and security management since security is a menace in Africa as a whole.”
The East African Community (EAC) has begun preparations for the EAC University Students’ Debate 2014, which scholars from institutions of higher learning in the region will attend in Nairobi.
The event is scheduled for September 4-5.
The EAC debate brings together students from various universities and institutions of higher learning from the region. It has been hailed as an important avenue for sharing information, exchange of ideas and promoting discourse and sensitisation.
Deputy secretary general of the EAC, Charles Njoroge, urged the youth to continue being advocates championing the tenets of integration.
Njoroge commended the EAC Youth Ambassadors Platform for spearheading and popularising the EAC integration within the university community.
The EAC mooted the university debate under the Nyerere Centre for Peace Research. The debate, among other things, envisages the full participation of the young people in dialogue as well as in the exchange of ideas on concrete issues that have impact.
